■Child Abuse [JIDO GYAKUTAI]
Child Abuse is defined as any physical violence or verbal abuse directed at a child by his/her parent(s) or guardian(s).
It includes not only violence, but also refusal to raise a child, or neglect that can have a negative impact on the child’s growth and development.
If you know a child who you believe is a victim of abuse, please contact your nearest Child Consultation Office, or related institution.

■Domestic Violence
In Japan, the term “Domestic Violence” is commonly given to the violence inflicted on women by spouses, boyfriends and other closely related individuals. However, it is not limited to the physical acts of hitting, kicking and other physical abuses. Rather, other forms of abuse, including emotional abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse and social abuse also fall under the category of Domestic Violence.
With the enactment of the Law for the Prevention of Spousal Violence and Protection of Victims, domestic violence has become recognized as a crime and a severe infringement of human rights. According to this law, victims of domestic violence include foreigners living in Japan, regardless of whether or not they possess residence certification. If you feel you are a victim of abuse, please contact one of the Counseling Center for Women (tel. #
027-224-4480 weekdays: 9:00-20:00, weekends and holidays: 13:00-17:00). In extreme cases where there is an imminent physical danger, please contact the police immediately.
