Health Checkups for Infants[NYUYOJI KENKO SHINSA]
At 3 to 4 months, 10 months, 18 months, and age three, a child can receive a free health and dental checkup. This service may differ depending on your local government. In order to receive this service, you must bring your Maternal and Child Health Handbook (Boshi Kenko Techo)

Vaccinations [YOBO SESSHU]
The notices of vaccinations will be provided for intended families by local governments and schools.
The vaccinations listed below are administered for a small price or free. When you take your child to get vaccinated, do not forget to bring your Maternal and Child Health Handbook.
 Requirements:
 1. The child must be a holder of a Foreign Registration Card
 2. These vaccinations should be done during the indicated period at places designated by the local government.
 3. Your child must be healthy enough to receive the vaccination.
Type of Vaccination
Typical Age Group and Methods of Vaccination
DPT vaccine(diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus)
Stage 1:
First vaccination
At least 3 months, but no more than 90 months of age, three times. (Each injection must be made at 20-56 days intervals.)
Additional vaccination:
At least 3 months, but no more than 90 months of age, once. (Additional vaccinations are commonly administered no less than 6 months after the initial vaccination.)
Diphtheria and tetanus combined vaccine
Stage 2  Between 11 and 13 years of age, once.
Poliomyelitis
Between 3 months and 18 months of age, twice.
(Injections must be administered at least 41 days apart)
Tuberculosis (BCG)
Between birth and 6 months of age, once.
Measles,Rubella
Stage 1: Between 12 and 24 months of age, once.
Stage 2: Between 5 and 7 years of age, once.(Before the child enters school)
Japanese Encephalitis
Stage
  1
 
First vaccination:
Between 6 and 90 months of age, twice.
 
Additional vaccination:
Between 6 and 90 months of age, once
(Additional vaccinations are commonly administered no less than one year after the initial vaccination.)
Stage 2
 
Between 9 and 13 years of age, once.
*Currently, we have stopped actively encouraging vaccinations for Japanese Encephalitis.


Day nursery [HOIKUSHO]
Day nurseries are available for children not enrolled in school whose legal guardian(s) work, suffer from illness, or have other daytime obligations. Although working hours differ depending on the nurseries, they normally open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Some nurseries have extended hours. The fee is generally decided by the local government and is calculated based on your child’s age and your last year’s income.  For further information, please contact your local government.


●Child Foster CareNYUJIINJIDO YOGO SHISETSU
If parents are unable to take care of their children for some reasons (parents are admitted to the hospital, etc), temporary foster care centers can do so. There are foster care houses called “Nyujiin” for infants under age 2, and others called “Jido Yogo Shisetsu” for children under the age of 18.

Medical Aid for Children [KODOMO NO IRYOHI JOSEI]
All holders of a Foreign Registration Card who have legal residence status in Japan can apply for the following types of aid:
  (1)Medical Assistance for Premature Birth [MIJUKUJI YOIKU IRYO KYUFU]
 
If you give birth to a premature child weighing 2000g or less, your child can receive free treatment at a designated center for the first year of his or her life, provided he/she is admitted to the hospital.

(2)Free Children’s Incidental Medical Expenses System [KODOMO IRYOHI MURYOKA SEIDO]
 
Children who are up to graduation from junior high school (March 31 of the year when he/she turns 15) may qualify for free medical treatments that are incurred. You need to apply for a ‘Health and Medical Beneficiary Certificate’ with your local government. As this assistance is insurance-based, you must be covered by medical insurance, either directly or as a dependent.

(3)Independent Support Treatment (Foster Care) Benefits [JIRITSU SHIEN IRYO (IKUSEI IRYO) KYUFU]
 
If you have a child below the age of 18 who is physically handicapped, or, who has an illness/injury that, if left untreated would result in a handicap, he/she may apply for medical treatment aid at a designated independent treatment facility.

(4)Medical Assistance for Children with Severe Illnesses [SHONI MANSEI TOKUTEI SHIKKAN CHIRYO KENKYU JIGYO]
 
For infants with chronic ailments, medical expenses for specific diseases (malignant growths, chronic heart disease, congenital metabolism abnormalities, etc.) are born by the government.
Applicants for assistance must be under the age of 18.  Approval is dependent on the condition of the individual's disease, so please contact your Prefectural Health & Welfare Center for more information.


Child Support Benefits [KODOMO TEATE]
If you are the legal guardian of a child who is 15 years old or younger (up to March 31 of the year when he/she turns 15), you may apply for this support.
In application, you must be a holder of a Foreign Registration Card and have status permission in Japan . However, please note that this does not guarantee approval for financial assistance.

Local Parenting Groups [CHIIKI KOSODATE SHIEN CENTER]
If you have questions, or concerns about how to best bring up your children, you may find help in a local parenting assistance center which are located in nursery schools. This service is not available in every area, so please contact your local government for more information.


Further Assistance:
(1)Financial Assistance for Raising Your ChildrenJIDO FUYO TEATE
 
This financial aid is intended for children who are raised by single mothers, fathers or legal guardians whose partner is unable to provide for the family due to divorce, death, etc.
Aid approval depends on the income of the claimant (the mother, father or legal guardian) and other supporting members of the household (parents, siblings, etc.)
All holders of Foreign Registration Card who have valid visa status permission in Japan may apply, however please note that this does not guarantee approval for financial assistance.

(2)Financial Assistance for Raising a Physically or Mentally Disabled Child [TOKUBETSU JIDO FUYO TEATE]
 
If you are raising a physically or mentally disabled child who is below the age of 20, you may qualify for special financial assistance.
All holders of a Foreign Registration Card who have status permission in Japan may apply for this.
However, please note that this does not guarantee approval for financial assistance.

(3)Loans for Single Mothers and WidowsBOSHI KAFU FUKUSHI SHIKIN NO KASHITSUKE
 
If you are a single mother and your child is under the age of 20, you may qualify for a loan to help you pay for your child’s expenses (educational, etc.)
All holders of a Foreign Registration Card who have status permission in Japan may apply for this.
However, please note that this does not guarantee approval for financial assistance.

(4)Single Parent's Medical and Welfare AssistanceBOSHI KATEI TOU FUKUSHI IRYOHI HOJYO]
 
Partial Financial Assistance for medical costs of the child is available to single parent families who lost their source of income through a divorce or death. This financial aid can be received when the child is 18 years old or younger (up to March 31 of the year when the child turns 18). The applicant for the assistance must not be an income tax payer.
All holders of a Foreign Registration Card who have status permission in Japan and are covered by Medical Insurance may apply for this.
Depending on the municipality, the range of uniquely applicable persons may also be expanding. For further information, please contact your local government.
